Position Purpose/Summary

Under the general direction of the Branch Manager, the Septic Technician operates a company vacuum truck to travel to designated commercial and residential locations to pump, service, and maintain septic systems, holding tanks, and related equipment.

This role is essential in ensuring safe operations, regulatory compliance, high-quality service, and customer satisfaction.

Shift/Hours

Monday through Friday; weekends as needed based on business demands.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and immediately report any deficiencies to the shop.
  • Report improper vehicle operation, faulty equipment, or unusual conditions to the Branch Manager or Operations Supervisor.
  • Safely operate vacuum/service trucks along assigned routes and travel to scheduled job sites.
  • Maintain communication with dispatch via phone or radio to receive route updates, service changes, or additional instructions.
  • Pump commercial and residential septic tanks in accordance with company procedures and environmental regulations.
  • Service portable restrooms, holding tanks, sinks, and related units assigned.
  • Ensure proper disposal of waste materials in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
  • Restock supplies and maintain equipment readiness.
  • Provide timely updates to supervisors regarding project status, delays, or customer requests.
  • Accurately complete required logs, manifests, service documentation, and regulatory paperwork.
  • Immediately report all work-related injuries, accidents, spills, or incidents to management.
  • Maintain cleanliness and professional appearance of trucks, equipment, and job site.
  • Perform additional duties assigned to support operational needs.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Valid California Class A Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement (cannot be E-Restricted).
  • Understanding of septic system operation, pumping procedures, and safety standards preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative.
  • Dependable with strong integrity and work ethic.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Capable of multitasking in a fast-paced setting while maintaining a professional attitude.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including routing systems and tablets.

  • Language skills:
    • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, manifests, and regulatory documentation.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with customers, dispatch, and management.
  • Mathematical skills:
    • Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
    • Ability to work with units of measurement, volume, weight, and distance.
  • Reasoning ability:
    • Ability to identify operational issues and make sound decisions in the field.
    • Ability to respond appropriately to standardized but variable job site conditions.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle equipment, talk, and hear. The employee frequently stands, walks, bends, stoops, kneels, and climbs. The employee must frequently lift and/or move between 50 and 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment

This position regularly requires work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and high noise levels. Travel to off-site work locations is required. A company vehicle will be provided.

Safety Requirements/Personal Protective Equipment

Employees must wear always required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all company safety policies and regulatory standards.

Pay Range

$23.00 – $29.00 per hour, based on experience and performance metrics.
